Summary

Has a killer lain dormant for years only to strike again on New Year’s Eve? LAPD Detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch team up to find justice for an innocent victim in the new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly

There's chaos in Hollywood on New Year's Eve。 Working her graveyard shift, LAPD Detective Renée Ballard seeks shelter at the end of the countdown to wait out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air。 As reports start to roll in of shattered windshields and other damage, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party。

It doesn't take long for Ballard to determine that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky。 Ballard’s investigation leads her to look into another unsolved murder—a case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch。

Ballard and Bosch team up once again to find out where the old and new cases intersect。 All the while they must look over their shoulders。 The killer who has stayed undetected for so long knows they are coming after him

I read this right after reading the night fire and I preferred this story。 Ballard is working the late shift and is called to investigate a shooting on New Years night。 At the same time she is working to find and stop a team of men who are terrorizing young women。 She is at odss with the department due to her unconventional methods and she calls in Bosch for help。

Oh this is a great series, and boy can Michael Connelly turn them out。 Well written, interesting plots, great characters who don't pull punches and get all dainty about other peoples' feelings when unwarranted。 I've read Harry Bosch #1 and was riveted by the series on Amazon Prime (THAT is great watching; will read the balance of the series titles in due time, like after retirement。。。), so it's interesting in this series for Harry Bosch to be a side character。 I love his and Renee Ballard's inte Oh this is a great series, and boy can Michael Connelly turn them out。 Well written, interesting plots, great characters who don't pull punches and get all dainty about other peoples' feelings when unwarranted。 I've read Harry Bosch #1 and was riveted by the series on Amazon Prime (THAT is great watching; will read the balance of the series titles in due time, like after retirement。。。), so it's interesting in this series for Harry Bosch to be a side character。 I love his and Renee Ballard's interplay。 My only quibble with this book is that Det。 Ballard goes farther off the reservation than I think is realistic for her character, even given her history of boundaries pushing。 But only a quibble。 。。。more

A great detective novel with twists and turns。 Loved the main characters。 The author did a nice job of portraying how current events of 2021 and beyond have changed the way police forces function。 The ending was unexpected and dark。

Excellent! Bosch has minor role。

For fans of Michael Connelly, this is a good, solid, suspenseful read。 He has wisely chosen not to try to make Renee Ballard, the protagonist a female Harry Bosch。 She is her own strong, smart, courageous and rebellious person and follows her own instincts。 Bosch acts as a kind of mentor, backup and friend for Renee and his role is well defined。 (Although I'd have to admit, I found myself craving a little more of him in the narrative) This book has all the elements of other Connelly books, a sol For fans of Michael Connelly, this is a good, solid, suspenseful read。 He has wisely chosen not to try to make Renee Ballard, the protagonist a female Harry Bosch。 She is her own strong, smart, courageous and rebellious person and follows her own instincts。 Bosch acts as a kind of mentor, backup and friend for Renee and his role is well defined。 (Although I'd have to admit, I found myself craving a little more of him in the narrative) This book has all the elements of other Connelly books, a solid hero, bad guys who are greedy, vain and evil and nail-biting suspense。 。。。more

While I love the plot and the writing, I don't want Renee Ballard to become the female Harry Bosch。 I appreciate the cross over and the mentorship, but I'd like to see Renee be less like Harry。 While I love the plot and the writing, I don't want Renee Ballard to become the female Harry Bosch。 I appreciate the cross over and the mentorship, but I'd like to see Renee be less like Harry。 。。。more

Very good。 I like Renee’s character。 Tough lady。 Bosch is a little too quiet in this。

Ann

A good fast paced cop procedural with a tough, gruff, engaging heroine。 Good diversion。

The much anticipated Renee-Bosch novel was worth the wait。 We again have Renee solving 2 cases which are not actually assigned to her。 When everyone in the police department is disillusioned and are in a reactive mode, she acts like a lone crusader, with only Bosch (with no official status) to back her up。 Some fellow officers just make it harder for her。 Lisa Moore, who was supposed to work on the serial rapists case, was such a b***h。 Most of the bosses in these series have been power-hungry, The much anticipated Renee-Bosch novel was worth the wait。 We again have Renee solving 2 cases which are not actually assigned to her。 When everyone in the police department is disillusioned and are in a reactive mode, she acts like a lone crusader, with only Bosch (with no official status) to back her up。 Some fellow officers just make it harder for her。 Lisa Moore, who was supposed to work on the serial rapists case, was such a b***h。 Most of the bosses in these series have been power-hungry, lacking far-sight, selfish and least bothered about the department, but Renee's boss, Lt Reynolds-Robinson was intelligent and understanding。 Though he was supportive of Renee, her brash attitude puts him also in trouble。The cases were interesting and unique。 I couldnt help turning pages to quickly get to the resolution。 Bosch adds a caveat to his philosophy of 'everybody counts or nobody counts'- which was little hard for me to digest。 That was so unlike Bosch, it broke my heart。 The current political and pandemic scenario was plugged into the plot but at times it felt overdone。 The numerous mentions of Renee pulling her mask up / down made me laugh。 As if, we would forget that this was during the pandemic。 I think this book will not age well。 20 yrs down the line, if someone starts this series, they might find it annoying or hilarious。 (The first book, Black Echo was published in 1992 and i read it in 2020。 It didn't feel dated)。 This had a underlying sense of melancholy throughout the book。 There is no humour anywhere。 Ballard has a potential love interest, she is serious even with him。 I miss Haller。 He is so much fun。 I wish Connelly brings Haller back soon。 Apparently the next one is also going to be Ballard - Bosch。 Though this book is not Connelly's best, this is the best detective series I have ever read。 1。 every book is unique, there is no formula, doesn’t repeat (nudge, nudge。。。Lincoln Rhyme- Jeffrey Deaver)2。 each book is a stand alone and can be read in any order (Re- Coromoran Strike- Robert Galbraith)3。 there is no overload of the detective's personal story, (Roy Grace - Peter James ) 4。 No overt romance (can't remember the series now)5。 doesn't try to titillate the readers with smut and gore (Karin Slaughter/ Peter James/ Most of the authors out there) 6。 Highly consistent, while other series feel worn out this series gets better and better。 In short, it's PERFECT。 Please bring the next one quickly。 。。。more

Still enjoyable! However, the motive was not very convincing。

Easy enough reading a it followed the familiar formula。 But This didn’t feel like the annual Connelly excursion into clever detective work。 This was dark avenger territory。 The only light spot was pinto the rescue dog! I really didn’t like the reminders of the pandemic, mask on mask off etc。 the story was dark enough without being reminded of the world we inhabit。

How about stop infusing libtard crap in your novels。 I know they take place on the Left Coast, but I think even in California, cops aren’t the godless liberals you make them out to be。

Another excellent Bosch/Ballard crime mystery。 Might be the best one yet involves murder, sex crimes, and the dark web。 Action packed and I couldn't put it down。 Another excellent Bosch/Ballard crime mystery。 Might be the best one yet involves murder, sex crimes, and the dark web。 Action packed and I couldn't put it down。 。。。more

I loved this Bosch and Ballard novel。 Really captured the sense of this crazy time that we live in these days。 I had a serious case of book hangover when I was finished with this one。 And couldn't figure out what to read next。。。。 can't wait for the next one。 I loved this Bosch and Ballard novel。 Really captured the sense of this crazy time that we live in these days。 I had a serious case of book hangover when I was finished with this one。 And couldn't figure out what to read next。。。。 can't wait for the next one。 。。。more

I do give this book 5 stars but it is the weakest 5 star book in Connelly's world。 Nobody tells the tale of two separate police cases like Connelly and he does this again quite well。 I thought at time this book slowed down in the details and the ending left a few plot line unresolved。 Still it is a classic Connelly tale。 I do give this book 5 stars but it is the weakest 5 star book in Connelly's world。 Nobody tells the tale of two separate police cases like Connelly and he does this again quite well。 I thought at time this book slowed down in the details and the ending left a few plot line unresolved。 Still it is a classic Connelly tale。 。。。more

Vem vill inte hänga över helgen med Renee och Harry i Los Angeles! The Dark Hours av Michael Connely。 Harry Bosch nr 23, Renée Ballard nr 4。Det vill jag! Another great Connelly book, once again with my favorite character, Harry Bosch mentoring Renee Ballard, who is beginning to really grow on me。 There are more than a couple of underlying political messages, and although I appreciate the masking references, they were a tad overdone。 A new dog is introduced and the Epilogue sets us up for many more story possibilities。 This gets four stars because I could put it down, but I just didn’t want to。

Good book。 Typical Connelly。 It was also interesting because it takes place during Covid time and all the police controversy。 Keep reading to see who dunit。

Love Michael Connolly BooksIt was hard to think of Harry Bosch aging and retiring, but the addition of Reneé Ballard has been wonderful。 But the cliffhanger!!??😬😬。 Can’t wait for the next one。

Another good story。

Not in my usual genre, but it was a good page turner。 Enjoyed the female aspect and Bosch of course。

Same old, Same old… Like a nice comfy blanket when you just want to chill。 No real suspense, no new plot points, just the same old story recycled once again。

REALLY, really enjoyed #TheDarkHours by Michael Connelly。 Fantastic characters, a fantastic storyline and superbly written。 Love the interplay between Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch。 Highly recommend this excellent police thriller!!

In a long ways this felt like a season of the Bosch TV show。 There were multiple things going on, multiple view and storylines, in overall the city and it's impacts drive various elements。 Ballard is used well in while Bosch is present he's not a crutch。 In other words this isn't a wash book in disguise。 I like the detail about impacts of protest and political of evil, and I also like the trust and distrust elements。 They all felt very real。 Overall great entry in the series。 In a long ways this felt like a season of the Bosch TV show。 There were multiple things going on, multiple view and storylines, in overall the city and it's impacts drive various elements。 Ballard is used well in while Bosch is present he's not a crutch。 In other words this isn't a wash book in disguise。 I like the detail about impacts of protest and political of evil, and I also like the trust and distrust elements。 They all felt very real。 Overall great entry in the series。 。。。more
